Synology DS723+
Off-site hot-storage target for the homelab. A Syncthing instance runs continuously and replicates selected datasets in near real time, so the most recent state of important data always lives outside the primary site.
Hardware
| Component | Model | Qty |
|---|---|---|
| NAS | Synology DS723+ | 1 |
| HDD | 28 TB (RAID 1, mirrored) | 2 |
Storage Layout
- RAID 1 mirror across the two 28 TB drives → ~28 TB usable.
- One volume, mounted to Syncthing's data root.
- BTRFS with snapshots enabled, so a Syncthing-side delete or corruption can be rolled back from the NAS itself.
Role
- Hot off-site backup — Syncthing keeps the remote dataset live; no scheduled job, no restore-from-archive step.
- Complements the cold backups documented in Cold Storage.
- Lives on a separate physical site and uplink, so a fire/theft/ISP event at the primary site doesn't take it down.
